Free Linux Alternative to Ghost

http://ping.windowsdream.com/ping.html

I'm wondering if anyone out there has given this product a try?  I've never really run into troubles with Ghost, but I've hit a number of troubles with Ghostcast server.  Namely, once I kick off the Ghostcast server with 16 clients, but every time at least 2 of them dont 'see' the server and dont start.  It would be nice to have an alternative to Ghost, but a server for it that works with less failure would be awesome!

Which invention comes last?

In the middle of a 'Star Trek vs. Back to the Future' discussion today, an interesting topic came up.  If someone had the advanced technology to build a star ship, and a holodeck, wouldn't it be more prudent to build a time travel machine first?  It would instantly enable you to discover all future inventions in the history of mankind in the mere blink of an eye.  It would make inventing new ideas and discoveries completely obsolete.

*** Yes, someone has already pointed out the mathematical proof that time travel can only exist into the future, and not backwards, so relax.  But if the theory of an infinite number of parallel universes is true, then wouldn't one of those dimensions be exactly like this one, only 2 days in the past?

Wubi for Ubuntu

http://wubi-installer.org/

I'd love to hear if anyone has ever given this a try.  I very often run a dual boot system, which is great for me.  Often if I am doing serious work, I need to use Windows, but for general browsing and such, Linux is just fine too.  The problem arises when I need to reinstall Windows, as I usually wipe out that partition completely.  When I reinstall, Windows overwrites the boot sector as well, and then I can't boot Linux anymore until I tinker with manually reinstalling a bootleader.

Sherlock Holmes

Lately, I've passed up reading some other classic novels to reread ALL of the original Sherlock Holmes stories.  However, I am trying to read them in the order they were first published, which as you can imagine, is a pain to track down:

Have fun in Traffic Jams!

http://www.eskimo.com/~billb/amateur/traffic/trafexp.html

A friend of mine turned me on to this gem.  Its all about how to have fun with traffic jams, and try to plan a strategy to disperse the traffic jam as quickly as possible.  A little basic traffic psychology for you!

Completely Honest First Date

Totally Hilarious!  Soo true too, how many guys wouldn't love to have the balls to say that to a woman on a first date?

Amplify

http://amplify.com/

I see a lot of people using this, and sometimes it seems interesting.  I'm going to give it a try tomorrow, but my only concern is of the content.  Most of what I see people posting to twitter from amplify or something similar, is all the same stories rehashed by a ton of people.  That isn't really social networking, the first time someone posted it yes, but after that it slowly becomes nothing more than spam.

Android based tablet

http://www.unwiredview.com/2010/08/20/samsung-to-name-its-android-tablet-galaxy-pad-7-and-10-inch-versions-in-the-making/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+UnwiredView+%28Unwired+View%29&utm_content=Google+Reader

I forgot completely who posted this link, but it looks awesome!  I dont really need the extras like a camera and 3G, but if they can beat Apple on the price point, they certainly will have some leverage!

Pretty hilarious clip about Facebook, too good not to share.  I like the overwhelming friend recommendations.  My friend sent me the link because he gets a ton of weird recommendations due to my network.  Some days everyone feels like this =)

Free eBooks

As my workplace is keen on cutting out our internet access during the daytime now, I've been on a mission to start reading some of the books I've always wanted to.

http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page

This site has been a big help, as it offers a ton of eBooks that are no longer copyrighted in the U.S.  It has pretty darn accurate copies of books, and a huge selection of almost all the classics.

Online Backups

For the longest time, I have avoided online backups.  For a while, I tried backing up ALL my stuff to an external harddrive.  That lasted about 2 months, before I got sick of trying all kinds of stupid software for backups.  No matter what time I set for the backup to occur, sooner or later I am using my pc at that time, or I have it turned off for the day.  I really should *also* be doing an onsite backup for speed, but lately http://mozy.com/ has been impressing me.  I've been trying their free 2gig plan, and though limited on space, it really is unobtrusive.  Though I am not looking forward to selecting all the other files and directories I need to have backed up, next week I will be giving the paid plan a try.

Supercharge your Gmail inbox

http://lifehacker.com/5614073/boomerang-schedules-your-gmail-messages-and-weve-got-beta-invites

A great way to send out emails at the appropriate time, but getting the task out of the way NOW.  I used to just mark them in my inbox and save the draft to be sent out, but my inbox just fills up too fast for that lately.

http://lifehacker.com/5321180/turn-gmail-into-your-ultimate-gtd-inbox

And here's where the real gem fits in.  You can now use multiple inboxs in Gmail, and I never realized that it could be used to keep your main inbox completely empty, so you can be on top of all new emails, while not completely forgetting about the older ones that you delayed.

Pandora Tips

http://lifehacker.com/201072/technophilia-15-ways-to-get-more-out-of-pandora

Some really great tips on how to shape Pandora to how you want it.  Mostly centered on getting your stations to play music that's more accurately what you are looking for.  Much better than a rehash of the same old tips that Pandora gives you, also has tips on digging up some new music you may like, other than what Pandora might find on its own.
http://bloggerbeats.com/

I thought it was going to be something very very different.  It seemed like a nice and interesting idea, help people stay focused while blogging, or working on their online business.  I don't know, do you think you could work for a significant length of time listening to that?

Interesting Link for today

http://finance.yahoo.com/family-home/article/110275/but-will-it-make-you-happy

In today's society, does money still equal happiness? Do more material possessions make you happier?  At what point does excess wealth and possessions take over, dooming you to worry about the 'haves' rather than the 'have-nots'?

Complaint of the Day

So, my complaint of the day is Gamefly.com.  Sure, they do ok getting me the video games as quickly as they can, but my complaint is that they don't have enough of the recent major games that I want to play.  If you don't have enough games in your queue, they will hold off on sending you anything at all until one of your requested games becomes available, so you need to place even less desirable games in your queue.  The problem comes when you have mostly games that are less available in your queue.  At that point, you are almost guaranteed to get a game you could care less about, simply because they figure someone else needs the good games more than you do!

http://nathanhangen.com/blog/

Several really interesting ideas presented on this blog, such as the strength of your 'brand' after giving away lots and lots of free content.  The one that interested me the most was actually the one about a day job being more risky than an entrepreneur.  "We sell our souls when we choose to work at a place where we don’t have a say in what happens" is certainly a quote that all of us connect with at some point or another.

Twitter tips and tools

http://mashable.com/2009/01/06/twitter-follow-fail/

First up, a nice top 10 list of the reasons you do not get followed in return.  I've been playing attention to this lately, after unfollowing nearly 100 twitter accounts that did not follow back, nor offer engaging content.

http://www.tweetybot.com/
And now, a tool for Twitter that allows you some tools to manage the people you follow.  I'm hoping it will be useful for dragging and dropping users into lists as well.

Skype for iPhone

Now that it has been announced that Skype will no longer be free for iPhone users, do you think another halfway decent app will come along to take its place?  Will hard limits on the amount of data previously 'unlimited data' plans can use curb the use of such apps?  Will any of the big 4 (or 3) carriers take a stand and still offer unlimited data?

Not so humorous

The Internet is done Allll wrong! Before you send a drunk message, you *Should* be asked 'are you sure you want to send this message to an ex? You *have* been drinking after all....'

The most usable Web OS?

http://desizntech.info/2009/08/top-5-web-operating-systems/

Maybe 3 years ago, I was looking around at some of the Web OS's on the market, but they were really still in their infancy.  Sure, they could do a couple things, and do them really well, but each one had its strong points, and many weak points.  Flash forward to today, and I see only a couple of those former prominent companies still put out a web OS product.  So tomorrow (or sometime soon) I am going to give a handful a try once again, and see if any can really stand on its own now.

Bypass those Interwebs filters

http://lifehacker.com/5516305/top-10-ways-to-access-blocked-stuff-on-the-web
Suprisingly, this article was not all fulled with fluff, like I thought it would be.  Being able to reach Gmail even when its down it actually really helpful, even though I've only seen it down once.  Stuff like creating your own proxy server, or opening a port on your router to access your home pc from work are not geared towards your novice computer user either, but the article isn't difficult for the average Joe to understand either.

Android 2.2 .... Oooo Shiny!

http://lifehacker.com/5545923/android-22-screenshots-our-favorite-features-in-froyo?skyline=true&s=i

Gives a very good reveal of the decent new features that Android 2.2 has over 2.1, not to mention some of what I would consider 'bug fixes'.  Would be helpful also for a developer to easily see some of the changes made to the interface, for writing help files and what-not.

Public Domain Books online

http://www.dagonbytes.com/thelibrary/dorgray/preface.htm

I started reading this book online, trying to get started on a long list of books I've wanted to read for some time.  I also started one of those 'virtual bookshelf' things on my facebook, not sure how well I like the features, but go ahead and add me on facebook and check it out: http://www.facebook.com/MShadax

Did you unfollow me?

http://who.unfollowed.me/

I'm definitely going to check this out tomorrow.  I probably would unfollow them in return, unless it was someone I talk to often.  In any case, I'd be curious to see how many unfollow me when I tweet a lot.  I do tend to tweet a lot about Empire Avenue, so some people might get fed up with it and unfollow me.

Clean up your Social Media Identity

http://mashable.com/2010/07/06/clean-social-media-identity/

I really like this article as it has a couple really great ideas, like using google alerts to keep track of sites that connect to your identity.  I've never tried out Google Alerts, actually, and certainly never like that.  Tips on building a brand, and keeping a consistent name are painfully obvious to most of us though.

Daily Rant

I hate it when someone starts 'steal' my online handle on a bunch of networks - even if it is an old one.  Grrr, just so annoying when I go to youtube and ASSUME that if someone registered that screenname, it MUST have been me, no?  The first time it started happening to me was when I was new to the 'net, so no big deal, I had like accounts at only 3 or 4 sites.  The second time it was bullshit, cause someone stole it on purpose.  I still use it, but have started a new one lately.  I can't image what I would do if I needed to start yet again.

Interesting Find of the Day - Free Online Diagramming

http://www.lovelycharts.com/

I gave this free online diagramming software a quick try, and it produced something that looks pretty nice.  I'll have to give it a try on a more complex real-world flowchart sometime.

Curious to try this, and dont know why

http://www.ustream.tv/mobile/broadcaster

I've seen a bunch of semi-celebrities going a video thing with uStream, and I'm curious to give it a try.  I don't actually have any interesting content or anything, but if it were super easy and capable of enough interaction, I might be able to scrape something together.

Probe Software for software developers

http://www.quest.com/landing/?ID=5103

I've never actually tried any probing software like this, but I'd be very interested to give the free trial a go =)  It might be useful IF I ever get around to beginning to develop apps in Java for the Android platform.  I'd imagine it would be super useful in VB, as it is a lot easier to start wasting a mess of CPU cycles without even realizing it.  Actually, I'm curious how I never tried one when working with VB.  If you've tried something similar before, drop me a line!

Social Media Contacts within Gmail

http://rapportive.com/

This one I could certain give a try for awhile.  It integrates info from Social Media sources to bring all their info together that you can see from Gmail.  Should make it even easier to follow up with people, if you can see it right from Gmail.

Run OSX under Windows

http://www.techremixed.co.cc/2010/07/how-to-install-osx86-snow-leopard-on.html
This article on running OSX on a PC seems very straight forward, and even easy to do.  I guess the reconfiguring your boot menu is a PITA, but simple other than that.  Certainly worth a test drive!

Yet another Twtter Tool I'd really like to try out

http://tweepml.org/

There's been a ton of Twitter-related stuff I've been posting on this blog lately, and with any luck I will get to a bunch of them this weekend. Anyways, this particular one lets you set up groups of Twitter users to follow.  Obviously, people will need to use the tool to follow everyone.  I guess the main advantage of this over Twitter 'lists' is that is is easier to constantly update, and all of someone's follows aren't *poof* is someone deletes said Twitter list.

A new Social, Mobile Game

http://www.scvngr.com/

Seeing my long list of neglected tasks/accomplishments for this week, I figure I might as well attempt something for 'fun' as well.  This seems like something that might be interesting, and might help make more social connections while I am at it too.

Tomorrow's Goal

Yup, I try and plan out what I would like to get accomplished tomorrow.  I only plan the minor stuff, things that I should be disappointed at not getting done, even though I often miss my own goals.  Anyways,  seeing as I finally have some CMS (Content Management Serv???)   installed on my web site, its time to slap together a really messy layout, and add it to the CMS.  That way, I can start moving over content this coming week.  And damn do I need that content!

Deciding on an OpenID service to use

I'm not sure, but I may have used OpenID in the past.  At the time, so few sites that I regularly visited used it, it fell by the wayside.  Now, with a lot more social media activity, I may get some use out of it.  However, I don't know which 'service' to use.  It seems like this first one is most common/popular:

A small collection of WordPress plugins

http://alexking.org/projects/wordpress

A nice bunch of useful WordPress plugins.  A lot of them seem very useful for social media or business related blogs.  I actually use something similar to a couple of them myself, and like them.  The next one that I am most interested in is the 'Since Last Visit' plugin.  That could be a nice feature visitors would Love!

Turbulence Training

Has anyone heard of P90X?  No, I'm not crazy enough to try that, not yet anyways.  I don't really have the 90 minutes every day during my work week to spend working out.  Turbulence Training is basically the baby steps before you try P90X.  Or something like that.

Weird Fact of the Day

Ernest Vincent Wright wrote a novel, "Gadsby", which contains over 50,000 words -- none of them with the letter E!  Actually, that's kind of cool!  And weird, too.

Links for improving your Wordpress blog

I'm sure you realize by now why I post so many links that deal with Wordpress (http://blog.relentlessdigital.com).  All 3 links are interesting, but the website has a ton more resources that are helpful.  If you've seen my main blog, the first link adds a widget that has more than just a 'retweet' button.  The second link is very similar to the first, but the last one is interesting.  I know of several people that have their blog show all of their 'tweets', sometimes just in a 'summary' post.

Social Media Resources

http://mashable.com/2010/07/18/essential-social-media-resources-12/

No, I don't know why I have been surfing Mashable so much today.  Must be link loadup day today =/  This is a nice collection of social media resources people might not be taking advantage of.  A lot of them are not applicable to those of us not trying to build a business social media presence, but a good number of them are applicable to individuals or branding.

Favorite Android devices

http://mashable.com/2010/07/19/android-twitter-buzz/

A nice article on which Android devices are the best, based on both user reviews and user complaints.  Although there are a ton of Android devices out there, the recent death of the Nexus One says that the major Android devices are stifling the competition more and more.

Inception

Seems that this blog is turning more and more into my springboard for new ideas for my main blog, I like that =)  Anyways, I've heard some good things about the movie 'Inception' and I'm hoping to go see it Tues. or Wed.  If I'm not too behind schedule, expect a review up on my main blog soon!

Weird Fact of the Day!

Studies with high-speed cameras show that most lightning flashes are multiple  events, consisting of as many as 42 main "strokes," each of which is preceded by a "leader" stroke coming from the ground. Each stroke is a powerful stream of electricity which follows the ionized path created by the leader. (Ions are atoms stripped of their electrons - this happens when they get caught in a powerful electrical current.) The average interval between these strokes is 0.02 sec and the average flash lasts 0.25 sec (one quarter of a second).  The duration of each powerful stroke is no more than 0.0002 sec (i.e., 2 ten thousandths of a second!), so the intervals between strokes account for most of the duration of a lightning "flash."  Thus, we see that each stroke of lightning is mostly "empty" time, much the same way that "solid" matter is mostly empty space!!

Stumbled across a tutorial for the Android SDK

http://hackaday.com/2010/07/15/android-dev-101-%E2%80%93-part-1hello-world/

Looks very good for starting to get your feet wet when it comes to developing apps for Android.  Certainly worth hacking into a bit, and seeing if there is something I would really like to do on the Android platform.  I think I posted awhile back about the emulator for Android 2.1 (and earlier).  Perfect excuse to test out some apps!

That is just too damn funny!

Formspring gone crazy

http://www.formspring.me/

I have to admit, I am very much thinking about jumping on the Formspring bandwagon.  Not attaching it to empireavenue.com or posting it like crazy to social networks or anything, just linking to it so people can click through and ask me questions.  With all the totally crazy people I know, should get interesting.

Trying out Android

http://lifehacker.com/5587260/how-to-test-drive-android-on-your-pc-without-buying-a-phone

I found this to be a great way to explore the differences between the versions of Android you might encounter on phones out there.  The real help it might prove to be is in developing apps for Android in the future.  Rather than programming an app and then seeking out people to field test it on different Android versions and different hardware out there, I could emulate the hardware and OS versions with ease!  I hope to have the time to test it out in the future, as I am planning on developing at least 1 Android app in the not-so-distant future.  I really like being able to see how hardware limitations might cripple certain features before deploying anything.

App Builder for Android

http://appinventor.googlelabs.com/about/

This actually looks very interesting, I'm thinking about trying it out a bit.  I have no doubts that it is doubly inefficient (less than efficient implementation of the instruction set, and the 'building blocks' adding additional redundancy) but if the feature set of the 'building blocks' is impressive enough, you might be able to do something actually useful with it.  Maybe...

Weird Fact of the Day!

Bulls are colorblind, therefore will usually charge at a matador's waving cape no matter what color it is -- be it red or neon yellow!

Narrow-minded view of online 'reviewers'

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/For-online-super-reviewers-apf-1731998810.html?x=0

Its a legitimate viewpoint, that people (like me, even) who do large numbers of online reviews of movies, games, music etc provide 'free' digital content for sites like amazon.com and review-specific sites.  What it completely fails to consider, however, is the ulterior motives some of the reviews might have.  Sure, maybe a large number of reviewers are vain and do it purely for the status symbol, but what about those that do it as part of a larger goal?  If you are a well respected reviewer of games, and I am a small game developer, might I be more inclined to hire you to promote my games?  Not review it, of course, but if you can get many people to read your opinion, isn't that just one step away from marketing a product?

This is the third time I've heard this rumor so far, that Blockbuster is eventually going to be folding.  I can see it needing to do some serious restructuring, but going out of business?  I really doubt that, seeing some of the smaller video-rental chains are still hanging in there.  Don't get me wrong, Blockbuster does suck.  It's business is not as streamlined as many of the smaller chains, and its prices across all its offerings is too high to compete.  They try to compete in video game rentals, but online rental places are gaining more ground on them, and have them beat on price.  I am signed up with gamefly.com myself, but the wait times often annoy me, and I rent from someplace in town.  The only other rental place went out of business not too long ago, so Blockbuster is all I have.  Just like the overly expensive movie rentals, their game rentals are a few dollars more than that small video store that went out of business.  I think that Blockbuster is starting to get the picture, and are going to try and directly compete with companies such as redbox, netflix, and gamefly, using their numerous locations to move items faster and hopefully cheaper.

Cruel Prank?

This seems like a pretty harsh joke to pull on someone.  I can't even imagine how much hair that will yank out, not even considering his head!

Next artist for UFC posters?

I really like this fan-submitted UFC poster.  Sure, its all about Anderson Silva, but at least it catches people's attention more than the bland 'fight card' posters.
